Ford Explorer Towing Capacity & Off-Road Capability
Power is built into the dynamic Ford Explorer, and you can count on this SUV to haul everything from boats to heavy-duty cargo wherever the road takes you.
When properly equipped, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds. From small campers to large boats, that’s more than enough for any equipment you need for the job site or an outdoor adventure. Plus, with features like AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability and trailer sway control, your cargo stays stable, no matter how large your towing load may be.
The exceptional strength of the Explorer’s towing performance is impressive. However, once you pair that power with the available Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management system, you can take on whatever road conditions come your way with ease.
The capable drivetrain comes with seven Selectable Driver Modes, including Normal, Trail, Deep Snow/Sand, and Tow/Haul. It even features an Eco Mode to optimize fuel economy. All you have to do is choose the mode that best fits the current conditions, and the system will adjust the SUV’s overall performance for enhanced control.

Performance Specs & Engine Options
With four different powertrain options to choose from, the Ford Explorer caters to all drivers, regardless of the performance you want to experience.
Here’s a quick look at the engines available for this capable SUV:
- 3.0L EcoBoost® V6: 365 horsepower
- 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4: 300 horsepower
- Enhanced 3.0L EcoBoost® V6: 400 horsepower
- 3.3L V6 Hybrid: 318 horsepower
Each engine generates a one-of-a-kind performance. The 3.0L EcoBoost® and 2.3L EcoBoost® engines are perfect for those who want to experience a balance of power and fuel economy. The enhanced 3.0L EcoBoost® generates more power for a more exciting drive.
Then, there’s the 3.3L EcoBoost® Hybrid. With an EPA-estimated range of 500 miles, opting for this efficient powertrain means more time exploring and less time filling up the tank.
Ford Explorer Interior
Once you dive into the interior dimensions of the Ford Explorer, you begin to get an idea of how spacious this SUV really is. It has three rows—with captain’s chairs in the second row—and seats for up to seven passengers. With all that space, this vehicle isn’t just a capable outdoor adventurer; it’s a family hauler, too.
Best of all, every row comes with ample legroom, so everyone can stretch out comfortably even when the SUV is filled to capacity.
Multicontour seats with Active Motion® are also available for you and your co-pilot in the front row. The front seats offer top-notch support as well as five massage themes to keep you comfortable for the entirety of your journey. Want an easier way for your passengers to make their way to the third row? The Explorer offers E-Z Entry second-row seating, too.
Of course, the interior isn’t just about comfort and space. With SYNC® 3 infotainment, an in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless charging, it offers entertainment and convenience as well.

Cargo Space
If you need lots of space for your cargo, the Ford Explorer can accommodate. Here’s how much trunk space you can expect behind each row of seats:
- Behind the 3rd Row: 18.2 cubic feet
- Behind the 2nd Row: 47.9 cubic feet
- Behind the 1st Row: 87.8 cubic feet
The Explorer makes loading cargo easier, too, with help from the available hands-free, foot-activated liftgate. All you have to do is stand behind the SUV with your Intelligent Access key in your purse or pocket and kick your foot under the rear bumper. Once the system senses your presence, the liftgate will automatically open! You can also adjust the height of the liftgate to suit your preferences.
There’s also an optional Cargo Management System. Complete with extra side pockets and a storage area underneath the trunk floor, it provides additional space for all smaller items and valuables. And if you need to, you can flip the reversible load floor to access the plastic bedding. That way, you can keep the interior protected when the journey calls for wet or muddy cargo.
Ford Explorer Trim Levels
The Ford Explorer offers five different trim levels:
