Pouring Oil into Engine

Drivers in Pensacola, Crestview, and Fort Walton Beach lead very busy lives and may not be sure when they can fit in their next oil change. Standard oil changes take around 15 to 45 minutes. At World Ford Pensacola, our dedicated technicians are committed to getting your car in and out of the shop as fast as possible.

How Often Should You Change Your Oil

Oil ChangeIn addition to an oil change taking as little as 15 minutes, it doesn’t need to be done more than a couple times a year on average. It’s recommended that you get an oil change every six months or 5,000 to 7,500 miles (whichever comes first). If your car is older, then you may need an oil change every three months or 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

Models may differ slightly, so it’s important that you consult your owner’s manual for the most accurate amount of time needed between services.

Signs You Need an Oil Change

Your time is precious to you; therefore, it’s important to know when your car needs an oil change. Other than routine changes every six months, here are some signs it’s time to change your oil.

  1. Poor fuel economy: If you find yourself running to the pump more than usual, then you may be overdue for an oil change. As your oil ages it may thicken, and thick oil creates more resistance for your engine’s moving parts, causing your engine to work harder and use more fuel.
  2. Engine noise and knocking: Oil provides protection between engine parts, so if your oil isn’t performing properly there may be metal-to-metal brushing, causing loud engine noise. In severe instances you may hear knocking or rumbling.
  3. Dark and dirty oil: Clean oil will be amber in color and translucent. Over time particles from the engine may collect and turn the oil darker. If you check your engine oil and the oil is noticeably darker, then it’s time for an oil change.
  4. Oil smell inside the car: An oil smell inside the car can indicate a leak. If you smell oil it’s important to check your oil immediately or take your car into our service center.
  5. Exhaust smoke: Smoke discharging from your exhaust pipe may indicate an oil leak. If you notice this problem, have your car checked immediately.
  6. Excessive mileage: If you’ve been putting extra miles on your car, then it may be necessary to get an oil change sooner than normal.

Modern car models have warning lights to indicate when there’s a problem with the engine. Pay attention to your dashboard, and if a light turns on, check your owner’s manual to understand what the problem may be.
