How to Bleed Brakes

If your car’s brakes feel squishy and unresponsive at times, getting air out and bleeding the brakes may be the solution to the problem. Bleeding Your Brakes Steps

To bleed brakes, jack up the car and support it with jack stands, then remove all four wheels. Find the caliper bleeding screws and spray them with penetrating oil and try to loosen them with a wrench. After done, retighten the bleeder screws.

If the screws have been tightened and it’s safe to move on to the next step, check the fluid level in the brake master cylinder. Fresh fluid should be added if it’s low, and make sure the fluid is the one recommended in your owner’s manual. Fit one end of a piece of clear tubing over the bleeder screw and place the other end into a catch container like a glass jar or soda bottle.

With the engine turned off, have a friend or assistant pump the brake pedal until they notice some resistance. Your helper should let you know when the pressure has increased and the pedal is firm. As the pressure is maintained, open the bleeder screw to let the fluid pass through the clear tube. The pedal will fall to the floor.

Before the pedal hits the floor, your assistant should let you know when that happens, so the bleeder screw is closed immediately. Repeat this until the stream of fluid is free of any air bubbles and do this for all brake locations in the vehicle. Check to make sure the bleeder screws are tightened before putting the wheels back on.
