How to Check Brake Fluid Like a Pro

Having a well-maintained vehicle allows you to drive it for many years to come. Not only will it save you on possible expensive repairs down the line, it helps elevate fuel efficiency and gets you the smooth and seamless ride you deserve. One of the most important steps in ensuring your car is maintained is making sure your brake fluid is doing its job.

But, what does brake fluid do? Why is it important? How do I check my brake fluid? To answer these questions, World Ford Pensacola is here to help. Below, drivers in the Pensacola, Crestview, and Fort Walton Beach areas will find everything you need to know about your vehicle’s brakes.

How Brake Fluid Works

Brake Fluid ReservoirBrake fluid plays an important part in making sure your brake system is running properly. It works to transfer power that’s made whenever you press that brake pedal, turning it into pressure to amplify brake force.

Because there’s a lot of heat that’s generated when you use your brakes, your brake fluid can diminish into vapor over time. It can also be lower due to worn brake pads or if there’s a leak in your brake lines. If your fluid is too low, your brakes may not work the way they should, which can result in you not being able to stop when you need to.

How to Check Your Brake Fluid

Mechanic Checking Under HoodBefore you can check your brake fluid, you need to find your reservoir. This is different on every vehicle, but it’s typically located on the driver’s side connected to your brake master cylinder. It looks like a plastic container with a little lid.

You also want to check your owner’s manual, as sometimes you’ll need to pump your brake pedal a certain number of times before checking the fluid. Additionally, take caution with this fluid, since it’s highly toxic. Any rags or cans that contain this fluid should be disposed of at your local toxic waste center.

1. Make sure your reservoir is clean and free of any debris. Even if a small amount of dirt gets inside, it can cause your brakes to fail.

2. Open the container and see what level the fluid is. Make sure to not leave this uncovered for too long! Brake fluid can easily soak up moisture and if any gets into the fluid, it is ruined. This goes for open canisters of brake fluid, as well. This process needs to be quick, but carefully done.

3. Ensure your brake fluid level is within half an inch of the cap. If it is low, add the proper brake fluid. If it’s empty, you may need to bleed your brake system. Take your vehicle to an authorized dealer to do this right away.

4. Make sure your fluid is the right color. If it’s dark, it should be replaced by a professional at your authorized dealership.
