Before any issue is fixed, it’s important to identify what might be causing the issue. When discussing a flooded engine, there are a few signs to look out for, letting you know there might be too much fuel in the engine…

• Emissions color: See a darker smoke? The engine may need a look.
• Trouble starting the car: If you’re unable to start the car, it might be because the engine has excess fuel. On those chillier Florida evenings, this can lead to issues, as it takes more fuel to start the engine in cooler temperatures.

Fixing Your Flooded Engine

To fix a flooded engine, the air-to-fuel ratio must be brought back into harmony. One option is to allow the excess fuel to disperse. Open up the hood and wait a few minutes before starting the car once again. When you do decide to start the car, be sure you aren’t pressing on the gas pedal.

If this doesn’t do the trick, there is another technique. While in park with the car turned off, push the gas pedal down and hold it. Make sure you aren’t pumping or jamming the pedal. With the pedal down, the throttle is opening, letting air flow in.

After you’ve done this for a few seconds, wait a moment, then perform this again, keeping your foot pressed down on the pedal. You’ll want to do this until the engine starts again.
